Hello, I have five hens three black copper marans and two araucanas. my girls are so loud, they started being just a week before turning 5 months. One copper starting laying one xsmall eggs at 19 weeks old. I am puzzled by why the eggs are small. ??? She is laying one egg per day since July 11, exactly at 19 weeks old.

Their egg will get bigger when they're older.

Hi :welcome

Often new layers can lay some odd eggs to begin with. Once they get their egg laying machine in full working order I'm sure your eggs will get more normal. If they are happy and healthy I would not be too concerned.

Good luck and enjoy your time here on BYC :frow

I saw one of my hens running out of the coop with a egg shell in her beak and a couple of other hens following her, once i opened the coop i found yolk in the corner of the coop. some hens are laying hard shell eggs but this soft one was right under one of the roosting bars, what should i do? i have been picking up the eggs every morning except today my two laying hens have not gone inside to lay but only to try to eat the yolk i found. I picked up everything left from the broken soft egg.

I just let them have softshell eggs. Won't hurt them at all. Being new layers could be the reason for the soft shell. If it keeps laying soft shell eggs, you can try to increase their calcium.

This is normal for brand new layers. Feed them a complete layer feed and give them a few weeks to get their egg laying machine parts working well.
