New to chickens

Hi everyone, I'm very new to chickens and this page. In fact, I'm eagerly awaiting my Rhode Island Reds from a local farm and am so excited. In the meantime, we are building their coop and eagerly awaiting. I'd like them to free range in my backyard (we only have a 1/4 size lot) and would love some suggestions on such. Thanks for listening.

Hi and welcome. The main thing when free ranging is to know the environment and its safety for the chooks. Also, anywhere you let the chooks go will get wrecked - dug up, pooed on.

When do your chooks move in?

My girls should be ready in a few weeks (I'm getting them at 12 weeks old from our local farm, so they are not quite ready). As far as my yard, im ok with it. We have a huge problem with wood bugs in my yard and I won't use pesticide, because we have a little doggie, and they are attacking my beautiful elm tree, so if they scratch up the yard, it's ok
