This summer my family and I bought a house with some land in the country. I was so excited. There was already an exsisting chicken coop and large run. I was planning getting chickens next spring, making modifications to the coop and run this year. Then I was at farm store recently and saw the baby chicks there and couldn’t wait till next year. Went home and debated googled online hatcheries found Murray McMurry (same hatchery my grandma ordered her chickens from when she started her homestead in Western Montana 50 years ago)and ordered an assortment because I couldn’t make up my mind on what chicks to get and figured we could raise them in the brooders till they are fully feathered and get them in the coop by winter and have eggs in the spring. All 17 chicks are doing great now in a larger brooder in the garage. Of course it snowed 2 inches the day they shipped gotta love Montana weather. It’s been in the 70s during the day 30s at night for the last couple of weeks. Most of my chicks are still a mystery. Backyard chickens is such a great resource. Thank you.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. The Learning Centre is also a great resource.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

To Backyard Chickens!

It is very exciting to get new babies! I was surprised to see them at the tractor store this fall. Usually they are only here in the Spring.

Have fun with them

:welcome 2x Surprised your saw/found chicks at TSC in Fall. BYC is full on info & members willing/able to help with any questions you may have. You have your hands full Chicks don't stay "cute fuzz balls" very long, ha ha. When they're 6 - 8wks you can post pictures so we can help decipher the breeds & (fun part) guessing the sex. Enjoy and again WLECOME!
