Hello All,

I live in Summerville, SC and on Saturday will be picking up three comets and 1 true blue chick. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I’m in the process now of building a chicken coop out of pallets, any help with that would be nice too.

I look forward to learning a lot from this forum.

:welcome :frowChicken advice at your finger tips. Click on forums look for coop designs lots of good ideals there . Age and pictures of your new chickens will give us more information to advise you . For now keep young chicks warm. 95 degrees for hatchlings. Lower the temperature five degrees each week until they are fully feathered . At which point you acclimate them to whatever the temperature is in the coop . Try not to do extreme temperature drops .

G’Day from down under Vernon :frow Welcome!

My tip: steer clear of chicken wire which is OK for keeping chickens in but pretty much useless at keeping predators out.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you want to, you can also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. This one might be handy for you:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Pallets are the best i started with a pallet base and a bunch of old crate lumber that I got from work and at the end of the summer I had a pretty nice coop.. I had know idea how to build a coop.. but one pierce at a time.. maybe this will inspire you a little. Good luck chickens are the best ... my dogs are not happy
