New to chickens...

That’s definitely was the case for my barred rock. She was squatting hard (I guess I’m her Roo). But now my silkie is squatting. So I’m wondering is this only a hen behavior?? We thought this silkie was a Roo, but we really would prefer him/her to be a hen ;)

Are you talking about squatting? Hens about ready to lay will squat if you hold your hand above them...at least that's what mine have done. Wide-open, palm side down...if they squat, they'll be laying soon!

I think a pullet is much more likely to squat than a cockerel.

FYI.....semantics, maybe, but can be important communication terms when discussing chicken behavior.
Female chickens are called pullets until one year of age, then they are called hens.
Male chickens are called cockerels until one year of age, then they are called cocks(or cockbirds or roosters).
Age in weeks or months is always a good thing to note.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t know ages were the defining part of pullet and cockerel I felt inexperienced enough so I just referred to them as hen and Roo. Good info thanks!!!
