New to Chickens

Welcome to byc! Only four chickens!? Be careful! You get four cute chicks one day then slowly and surely those four turn into forty!

About where do you live in Florida? I'm about an hour south west of St. Augustine, in the middle-of-nowhere. I've had many different breeds. I started out with Rhode Island reds(my grandmothers favorite breed) and Barred rocks. Then came some hatchery chicks that got shipped to me. Silver laced wyandottes, Australorps and a few more breeds.

I've also had a few new hampshire reds, Silkies, Dominiques, Easter Eggers, a Silver sebright pair, frizzles, many barnyard mixes and Bantam Cochins. I currently have old English Game Bantams, porcelain d'uccles, black tailed white Japanese bantam and twenty+ mixed breed chicks(mostly part Easter Egger and marans) I hatched out myself a few months ago.

I've had no heat related issues with any of my flocks. Be aware of fowl pox though, you can get chicks vaccinated for it. It Is spread mosquitoes and you already know about the large number of these guys here.

A fan for your chickens is a life saver! As are frozen treats. What breeds do you like so far?

Hi and welcome to BYC

On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping birds - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archives . Ditto the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
