Hello, Im Gracies Veggie Box, I live on a small farm in NC, We have had a few chicken over the years, and we had no luck! we have predators that can fly over or dig under, just to snack on our birds, I hope before we start our next flock i will have a better understanding on how to handle this problem.

Welcome to BYC :frow
There are a lot of tips that you will get on here for how to make your run secure. What type of coop do you have? You could lock them inside during the night if it is more secure than your run.

We had an open 10x20 run with a coop on the end where they went at night, lost them all, the next year we had a 10x10 covered run with the coop, and lost them too, it took longer but they still got them all, we havent done anything the last 2 years. i would like to try again, but i really dont want to feed them to other animals

What type of wire are you using on your run and what are you using as a cover? Do you have any idea of what animals could have been killing them?

reg. chicken wire on sides and top, we have alot of red fox and hawks
Ok, so regular chicken wire could be the problem, most predators can rip through it pretty easily. Hardware cloth is usually pretty good for most predators. An electric fence wire will work excellent though. To stop them from digging under you can burry hardware cloth around the outside of the run. For a run cover, try to find some heavy duty netting.

I used metal roof panels on mine but that might not be a good option for your run.

Also, with your coop, you said they went inside it to roost at night but do you block them inside for the night? If you shut the doors and windows and block off the chicken holes then it will be pretty hard for anything to get in there.

:yesss: We are glad you joined this flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.
I agree with stop using the chicken wire. Invest in hardware cloth.
