Hi All—-

I joined this group because I just purchased six ladies for eggs (Golden Comets.) I wish I had joined before purchasing a coop—-I should have made one. The Tractor Supply coop is nice, but will probably be too small when they are full grown and doesn’t seem predator proof. I do have a few questions—-is anyone in the Gaston County/Charlotte area? I would love to have someone nearby that I could get advice? Where is the best place to buy feed and bedding? Etc...

Thanks,
Laura in Gastonia, NC

Hello, Laura, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Do you have a Tractor Supply near you? They usually stock decent feeds.
I would start building a new coop now because the question isn't if your girls will be too big for it, it is when because I will guarantee it is too small for your chickens unless you have just one and want to torture it, which you obviously don't on either score!
It will hold you over while you build something more appropriate but I would keep it for when you need to isolate or if you end up wanting to introduce new pullets to your flock in the future or us it to brood future chicks. They do serve useful purposes. Permanent housing is not one of them.

Hi laura,
I feel like you can build a coop of your own that will be more compatable for you flock. My husband and i built one from reclaimed materials except for the roof rafters. We checked first with the county zoning department for the maximum footage without a building permit. Then we built our structure 1.3 cubic ft smaller.
Start doodling and laying out what you imagine you would like. Check out craigslist for doors, windows, lumber, old metal roofing or shingles. Yard sales and re-stores are great sources. You dont have to spend a fortune to have a very secure and safe chicken coop.
Look forward to seeing pictures along the way.
Welcome to the backyard!

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in the link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.
