When building your coop, don't forget to deter critters than can dig UNDER your foundation. I always recommend hardware cloth 12" up the sides of the outside walls and 12" buried in the ground around the perimeter of the outside of the coop. You can do this by digging a trench and bending 24" of hardware cloth in an "L' shape, half up the outside wall, half in the trench. Put the dirt back in the trench and firm it down. Keeps out rats, mice, skunks, weasels, etc. And I agree, as big as you can afford, tall enough for you to walk in and clean. I suspended the rung section of a wooden ladder from the ceiling of my coop and my girls love to perch up there. I have two shelves against the far wall for nest boxes and more perching space. Use galvanized cans for feed, and cover your outside runs to keep hawks from coming for chicken dinner. Enjoy your birds!
