We have a coop with a small run and will be building a larger run once the weather breaks.

Not a pre-fab I hope. They NEVER come close to housing the number of birds they state they will house. Usually it's about 25%. How many chicks are you getting, how large is the coop in sq ft and how large is the run in sq ft?

Hi! Welcome to BYC! It's so exciting to get started with chickens for the first time.

I agree with Dobie Lover. You need to figure out how many chicks you can get based on the size of your coop and run. A bare minimum requirement for coop size is 4 sf per chicken, and for the run it is 10 sf per chicken, but I think that is too small. If the chickens don't have enough space, they will start pecking at each other excessively and you'll have trouble on your hands. You can find a lot more information in the Coop and Run Forum.

So, I don't mean to start off with putting any sort of damper in your plans, but I am speaking from experience. I now have 4 coops because I didn't know this information before I started.
