New to chickens

We have a coop with a small run and will be building a larger run once the weather breaks.
Not a pre-fab I hope. They NEVER come close to housing the number of birds they state they will house. Usually it's about 25%. How many chicks are you getting, how large is the coop in sq ft and how large is the run in sq ft?

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! It's so exciting to get started with chickens for the first time.

I agree with Dobie Lover. You need to figure out how many chicks you can get based on the size of your coop and run. A bare minimum requirement for coop size is 4 sf per chicken, and for the run it is 10 sf per chicken, but I think that is too small. If the chickens don't have enough space, they will start pecking at each other excessively and you'll have trouble on your hands. You can find a lot more information in the Coop and Run Forum.

So, I don't mean to start off with putting any sort of damper in your plans, but I am speaking from experience. I now have 4 coops because I didn't know this information before I started. :D
