I am new to chickens, thought I should have some since eggs were up to $5 for 18, and since the corona, no one knows what will happen in the future. I live in small town in the South. On Good Friday this year, I got my first 10 baby Buff Orpingtons (I did research which type I should get chosen for dual purpose and temperament) from Tractor Supply. They are in my laundry room in a stock tank. I hope most will be females, but am pretty sure Gertie (the one pictured in my hand) is a boy. They are only 3 weeks old, so I know it will be a while before I can figure out how many will produce eggs and how many will have to be given away (We don't want roosters fighting). I have 6 children, 2 dogs and 2 gerbils. I heard about BYC through the many searches I did before deciding to get the Buff Orpingtons, and it looks like one of the most helpful sites out there. I am in the process of figuring out how I want to build the coop, we bought a covered run 9'8" x 13' that we are putting together.

Thank you guys for being here. I have learned a lot from reading many posts.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Yep, Gertie is Gordon. If you were looking for dual purpose, why aren't you going to raise the cockerels to butcher weight and process them?

I may just have to keep him. I wanted dual purpose so I could at least give away the ones that were not hens, and if the corona becomes too hard (I know a lot of processing plants stopped picking up their meat chickens) I wanted the option of having meat in the future.

He is the nicest of the chicks so far, does that mean he will be the meanest of the roosters once they are older? (I heard the males and females switch friendliness as they age)

Thanks you!
