New to chickens

I am a retired nurse and retired to Texas with my family from Louisiana. We have a several acres. Love the outdoors and have 2 dogs. My husband loves to garden and I love plants. We started out with 6 chicks 3 RIR and 3 Buff Rock. Overnight one of the RIR checks died so bought 2 Tetra Tint and 1 Buff Rock. So far all are doing good. So been a chicken farmer for a week.
My first question is I had several chicks with poopy butt and what causes this?

First of all, welcome to BYC! :welcome

Poopy butt is caused from stress from traveling, shipping, and overall movement. I've had many experiences with poopy butt (or 'pasty butt') and some made it, while some didn't. The first thing you must do is soak their bottoms in warm water - not too hot. And keep it in for a good 5 minutes (don't drown the chick :)) Get a warm, wet towel/paper towel and start rubbing off the poop gently. Once it's all off, the chick should start pooping - LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS. Be patient. Wait 'till it's done, then start drying it with a dry, clean towel. When you bring it back to the chicks, put it right near/under the heat source and dip her beak in the water to make sure she's hydrated. Make sure to add a couple drops of apple cider vinegar to the water, if you have it on hand.

After you do this process with each chick that has poopy butt, check if they are wobbly when they walk. If they are, I would check on it every hour or so, because it most likely won't make it. If it is alive, active, and robust, it is 99% likely to make it.
