New to chickens

Hi Everyone! I a new to chickens, but have always been intrigued/liked chickens. I do not have any chickens right now, but just researching and gathering information for when I am ready to take the plunge. The main/beginner breed I am interested in is cochin bantams. I do understand that they can go broody and are not as abundant of egg layers of some other breeds. What draws me to them are that they are small in size and considered friendly.
Outside of my interest in chickens, I tend to craft for fun. I look forward to searching the site and gaining valuable information!

Welcome! Cochins are cute,, but do not go y what the enternet says about their temperment. all chickens are different. if you want a lot of eggs, bantams are not for you. try ISA browns. beautiful, sweet, and som many eggs.you can also easily avoid roosters from day one with that breed.

I never intended to have Bantams of any kind and ended up with two Cochin Bantams. Do I love them? Absolutely! In fact, I just got three more Cochin Bantam chicks. I've never seen anyone sell the chicks as anything but straight run, and I think I may have a rooster in the new batch. But, I can live with that.

I get plenty of eggs from the other girls, and frankly, I find the Bantams' little eggs adorably cute. I think they would be a good beginner breed. I have a Barred and a Red Frizzle, and despite being told that Frizzles aren't particularly cold hardy, Gabby has lived through two frigid, windy Iowa winters in an unheated coop with no ill effects. Sally, the Barred, is absolutely fearless and will take on ANYBODY in the flock if they come at her. But, with people, she is completely laid back.

Mine don't hop in my lap, but they certainly come to me for treats and are a lot easier to corral than their full-sized sisters. They don't take up much space, don't eat as much as full-sized hens and are so darned cute it's hard not to fall in love with them. I always refer to them as "my little jewels."
