(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Hello, my name is Ashley. My family and I are brand new to chickens. We bought home with a 2 acre plot a couple years ago and it had a chicken coup from the previous owners. We finally decided to get it up and going to have some chickens on our own. I have a lot of food allergies, so we thought maybe eggs would be ok if we can control what we feed our chickens. We are raising them grain, soy, corn free.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We currently have 11 but we expect some to be roosters that will be rehomed. We only want to keep one rooster.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We currently have 4 Barred Rocks (one does not look like a Barred Rock though), 2 Golden Sexlinks, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 Ayam Cemanis.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
How it all comes full circle. We feed the chickens our scraps, vegetables, and they free range. They produce eggs and fertilizer; we nourish ourselves with safe allergen (mine) free eggs, and the fertilizer helps our garden. Then it just comes back around.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am one of those, too many hobbies to count people. I LOVE houseplants and have a collection. Otherwise gardening, macramé, crochet, painting, gaming, etc. As a family we like gaming and play MTG and Warhammer 40k table top games.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Its just my husband and I and our preteen. We have 2 large dogs (coonhound mix and shepherd mix) and 2 cats. We are trying to convert our little slice into a more self sustaining homestead, slowly, but we will get there. I stay home while my husband is a geologist.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found it via google. I started researching when we decided to try chickens, and now I find myself coming here everyday with every question. So I had to join, right? Seemed like the right move.
