I second what @janiedoe wrote and will add that you should also get Australorps. They are lovely birds and lay well.

Welcome here Mr. Steve. What a sweet "Dad" thing to do for the kids! I have Isa and Australorp breeds. The Isa's are friendly and do lay large eggs every day. My Australorp is a sweetie, goes broody ( wants to sit on all eggs for weeks) and her eggs are smallish, and semi regular 4-5 a week. There are good articles about coops on home page. Enjoy them.
p.s. pick breeds that are good for your climate.

Beware of the production breeds, they are short lived and are more prone to health issues, I'm telling you this from experience. All three of my ISAs got sick and died. Barred Rocks would be better.
