New to Chickens

Our back yard has a 6 foot fence. What will stop the chickens from flying over the fence if their wings aren’t clipped?
Welcome to BYC!

Here is an article on Wing Clipping that shows where and how to trim feathers.

Chickens can't actually fly. They more so hop very high or far and use their wings to give them some extra distance. Clipping their wings may help a little, but it's possible they can still hop the fence if they really try. What breeds do/are you looking to get?

I only clip when I have an escape problem -- which is usually POL pullets, who seem to get restless from their hormones.

In theory, a wing clipping should be good until the next molt.

Many adult dual purpose chickens simply become too large and heavy to fly. One of the more extreme examples was my Light Brahma, Dumpling, who could achieve about a 15-foot flight 18" off the ground when POWERFULLY motivated by the thought that there was a treat that she wasn't getting.

She had to have a ramp to get to the roost or she'd sleep on the floor.

On the other extreme, game chickens are known for roosting up in trees well out of humans' reach. :D

A 6-foot fence should contain *most* common backyard-type chickens.

Thank you for the information

I only clip if someone is beinf naughty like the chicken (I don't know its breed) that was hopping over the six foot fence to lay eggs in the neighbors yard. My chickens are in runs with netting over the top but that run didn't have netting yet so I did that and clipped one wing in case the thought occurred to her while she is out in the yard which happens a couple times a week. So far so good but she is only the third chicken whose wings I have clipped. Like I said though I only do one because it seems to offset their balance and make them disinclined to go wandering.
