Actually I don't have any yet xD. My mother (yes, I am a child...) doesn't care... actually she says:
"Get your dad to build you a coop. And don't expect me to take care of them" Which is her way of saying yes.
I have cared for chickens before, though. My friends have some, and I take care of them when they are on vacation (which is not enough to know anything... but it's something at least). I have been reading about them, though. They seem easy enough...
Anyway, this is just a "hi" from the new girl, I seem to have gone off-topic. I am 14 and live on five acres of land out in the middle of nowhere. I have 17 pets (two dogs, four cats, two rats, two guinea pigs, four mice and my mother has three budgies.) Basically all my time is spent with them...
Anyways, I am looking into chickens, and I find the more I research, the more interested in them I become. I'm still a newb though... I just know the basics.
If anyone wants to give me any advice... or anything, I'd love that.

EDIT: Oh, and I have a few questions regarding breeds. I want one that is easy enough to handle and friendly, but a good egg-layer... though I'm also fond of silkies... could I get both?

! Advice - chickens are very addicting! They are like potato chips - no one can have just one! You're gonna have a blast with them!

hello and welcome.

If I were you, and I wish I was at 14... I'd start with just a couple hens if you just want pets. maybe 2 or 3. If you are wanting to start a breeding project, go with a trio (a rooster and two hens). It all depends on why you want them. Are you in 4H or something? A trio would be better for you then.

Do LOTS of research. Each breed is very different from the next. Some are nice, some are not so nice... some are calm, some are not at all calm... some are big .... ok you get the idea.

If you need any help, we all are always here. Be careful to remember that not everyone knows what they are talking about, though.

Start with google or bing. Search for chickens that are cold or heat hardy (depending on where you are). Some do better with being penned up, and others will need to roam.

mypetchicken.com has a chicken matcher thing. You just answer a few questions and it suggests the breeds that would be best for you depending on your answers.

Good luck!

My advise is study up on the breeds that catch your eye, and make sure they're everything you want in a bird.
Good Luck!

from Ohio. You will find a lot of help here, just don't be afraid to ask. There are many breeds that will fill your wants, both bantam and standard. Good luck with your search.
