New To Chickens

We have plans for the coop, going to build this spring, and looking into chicken breeders. Mostly I need them for bug control, since I won't spray, but also as pets, eggs come in a distant third...smile.

I started with chickens for the bug control first, free fertilizer second, eggs also a distant third. Pets were sorta a given, though, as I knew I would name them and not eat them. But I wouldn't say I INTENDED to make pets of them. They'd be outside in their coop or the yard, I'd say howdy to 'em and feed 'em, water 'em, gather some eggs.

Never in my life would I have believed the order would switch on me and pets become the most important on the list. Eggs are just a bonus. Bug reduction is wonderful and far better than I expected, and the fertilizer aspects are fantastic if occasionally labor-intensive. For an hour a week.

So, welcome to BYC!! Don't be surprised if you become addicted BYC forums and then to chickens!! Excellent idea to do research first!
