New to Chickens!!!

I just finished my first try of the mustard egg, and it worked well today. she pecked at the egg, and at the first taste of mustard she walked away from it. The other chickens started to eat the shell, and as soon as they got the taste of mustard they also walked away!! I plan on doing this again tomorrow and saturday. hopefully by then she will think all eggs taste this way. thank you again for your suggestion!

Hip hip hooray!

Put some fake wooden or plastic eggs in the area you want them to lay, even if they are older hens. Transfering birds to new place is stressful for them, so just give them a few days too to get used to the new home! Good luck! You will love those breeds! Chickens are SO much FUN!

I took another mustard egg out to the coop this morning and to my astonishment, she went to the egg, kinda nudge it around, and then walked away!!! The other hen's did not bother to even check the egg out!!! Thank you so much! I'm amazed how quickly she learned! I will do it again tomorrow just for good measure. Thank you for saving my Georgia from the frying pan! The husband was bound and determined to eat her if I could not stop her behavior. So thank you again!!!

OMG! I posted about the same thing this morning. I was going to try dish soap in an egg. (I read that suggestion in another post)
Someone else said that chickens don't mind hot foods but if mustard works I'll try it. I'm also going to go out and put curtains on their nest boxes to try and darken them. Good luck with your egg picker and I hope this works for me too.

That's so great! I'm glad we could help!

I cobbled two halves of an egg shell together with scotch tape and squeezed mustard in and dish soap too. I wanted them to remember this experience.
Well between the mustard and the soap it actually looked like yolk and egg white oozing out through the hole.
I put it into one of the nests and came back about an hour later. Some one had rolled it around and most of the soap had oozed out.
So I took it out and pulled the two halves apart. It still had some yummy looking goop inside so I put it on the ground and all the girls came to check it out.
A few ignored it and a few took a taste only to shake there heads and walk away looking thoroughly disgusted.
I have found two blue eggs since that had a tiny pick in the shell but not through to the insides.
I think this may have solved the problem.
