New to Chickens

Since everyone in my family has chickens, fresh eggs, and a love for them, I feel left out. So, I am going to jump in and own my own chickens. I only know where to get my watering and feeding systems.. What is the easiest kind of chicken to raise with the most eggs?

! Glad you joined us and that you are getting your own birds!! That is exciting! It is hard to answer your question without knowing a little more. There are often trade-offs between breeds. For instance, white leghorns are laying machines - I think they are the "industry standard" and the eggs you buy in the store. But, for all the eggs they lay, they tend to be be a little nervous and jumpy - slower to warm up to people. Plus, this breed lays white eggs. Other breeds lay perhaps a few less eggs than the leghorn but in many cases lay brown or even blue or green tinted eggs. Some of these birds are a lot more docile and even friendly as well. This is what you get for a few fewer eggs. So, if you are looking for sheer numbers, I'd go leghorn. If you want variety (or many varieties), shop around a little and learn about the various breeds. Visit online hatchery catalogs to learn about the attributes of these breeds. Happy hunting and good luck!!!
 
...I'd also add that some breeds like Red Stars and Black Stars can really crank out the eggs as well. Didn't mean to suggest that leghorns outproduced others by a mile - some breeds are close to their production. But another plus for having leghorns is their small appetite....another reason why the egg industry uses them - helps the bottom $$$ line!
 
unfortunatly, the breeds that were bred for egglaying are the ones that are more flighty. leghorns are great for eggs, but none of mine are very friendly, too shy for me. i've heard that banty cochins are friendly, but mine is also shy. to be perfectly honest, i'm more of a duck person. have you ever had a duck eggs? they are sooooo yummy?

cayugas are friendly, but take time and training to get there. some good egg laying breeds are khaki cambells, or call ducks. oh, and
