Hello, I am excited to find this website and meet other people who talk and share their chicken stories. I have raised 6 baby chicks to the ripe age of three months now. I have recently discovered that I have more males than females. This is concerning to me because all I was really interesting in was fresh eggs. I have 3 Australorps and 3 Leghorns. And what appears to be 4 roosters! Dang it! Anyway I am thinking I should give the roosters away because they are sure to start fighting soon.

Also, I just recently bought three new hens. They are beautiful and pure breeds. However, I noticed that the original 6 are picking on the 3 new really bad. Any thing I can do? Was hoping not to have to separate them. Thanks for any ones help.I'm excited to be part of the group!

! Pleased you joined our community! Sorry to hear about your surplus roosters! Sounds like you have to separate your new chicekns from your old. Give them access to each other - like through a fence - and maybe allow them to free range together some. If they are close in size they will soon co-exist peacefully. Good luck to you!

Hi and :welcome

Good advice from redsoxs. They're probably just fighting because the newcomers need to be fitted into the pecking order. It should settle down soon. You could try separating them at feeding time though, we do that whenever we get new chickens, so everyone can eat their fill without being chased away from the food.

Sorry to hear about the roosters! Good luck finding homes for them.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I have definitely started separating at feeding time. Are there some breeds more agressive than others?
