Hi, Im new to raising chickens. In fact I dont even have chickens yet. I want to get my coop ready and have everything they need first. I raise Boer goats and horses and want to raise a small flock of chickens for eggs. I know nothing about chickens! I did have a cockatiel for 14 years! LOL!
I know people who have chickens that run free. Im afraid mine would get killed. Ill have lots of questions!

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC - this is a perfect site for questions. Everyone is very friendly. Its good to be prepared for them before bringing them home - get your coop/run all together & predator proof.

Best of luck with your future flock.

! Great to have you with us! To free range or not to free range...to me it's about striking a balance of the benefits and the risks. I live in a pretty "wild" area as far as predators are concerned. But I have a couple chicken friendly dogs that do a good job keeping things in check. In the last three years I have lost two birds....but again I think the chickens benefit greatly hunting down bugs and seeds and are happier then if I cooped them all day long. To each their own. Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone, sounds like a friendly helpful group! I am in Oregon too. I went and looked at coops yesterday, OH MY! $400 for a very cheesy but cute red barn. I think I have talked my SIL into building me one for a whole lot less money.

So maybe by next week, I can go chicken shopping!
