new to chickens!

Where in the PNW are you? We are in the Puget sound area. Welcome to having chickens! We just got our first girls in early June. :). One thing I might recommend is finding a good vet who sees and is knowledgeable about Chickens. We found one we really like in Spanaway. We do as much organic gardening at our home (no acreage) as we can, and though there are some vaccines, sounds like your girls may be too old for Mareck's. Though, I could be wrong. But that would be something to ask a vet. :). We use diotomaceus earth (food grade only) in their dust bath area, and also all though their bedding in their coop. Seems to be working well for us! Our girls are between 12-16 weeks, then we have another set of older birds in quarantine.

Thanks for all the advice! We are outside of Gig Harbor, 2 acres. We have 2 Nubian goats too. I ordered some Perma guard online, food grade. We live a couple acres from the bay, so the biggest bug problem we seem to have is mosquitoes and fleas.
The chickens' poo is loose, is that normal? When will they start laying eggs? They all have their combs almoat all the way grown, I will poat pics later. Maybe someone can guesstimate how old they are?
Igavey goats ivomec orally, can I use it on the hens too? What do u do for parasites in chickens? Thanks!

Oh geeze! I could have sworn I responded, but don't see it here... Their poo can be anywhere from a pellet to kinda watery. Their poo/urine are mixed together, so unless it's straight water and they look all (puffed feathers, tired), I wouldn't worry. I asked the same thing of our vet. :). As for parasites/worms, diatomaceous earth can help with some of it, corid for some and other meds for others. Just depends. I think the DE works as a preventative and for general worming, as it slices the buggers up. Put it in their dust bath area and that can help with fleas, mites and lice as well. Note I say help. Coccidiosis can be treated with corid in their water, it stops animation in the parasites. There is also albon which treats coccidiosis as well as potential secondary infections, which I believe you need a script for from most vendors. We got it from our vet. I'm not sure about what you have (ivomec), I believe if you go into a del's supply or coastal farm and feed they can steer you to the deworming stuff that is recommended for the chickens. :)
