Hi everyone.. I am very new to chickens.. Trying to learn as much as possible before I pick up my chicks in a couple of weeks.. I think I would like to get 6. I have 2 6yrs old girls who want more of pet chicks and I want some layers.. Any recommendations for friendly egg layers?? Also need a chicken coop. I have looked at a lot of them, and not sure which one is best.. I have about a 200 dollar budget for it..
Glad to be here..

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! A great place to start reading is the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
Check out the BYC Coops section for coop ideas, you can usually build or have built for you a lot better coop than you can buy in those prefab kits. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops If you want to do a search, pallet coops are quite popular where people build coops out of recycled pallets, they can be as plain or fancy as you want.
Be sure to check out the BYC Breeds section for member reviews on a lot of breeds https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds and the Henderson chicken breed chart does basic comparisons of a lot of popular breeds. http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html
Going just by the numbers, the commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and Red Sex Links for brown are probably the two best layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Orpingtons are one of the top picks, they tend to make really nice pets and be good with kids, Australorps, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. The Easter Egger / often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, is the most popular green/blue egg layer, they tend to be nice friendly birds, and kids love the colored eggs.

Welcome to BYC!

Kelsie has really set you on a great path with all the links! The learning center will get you started learning the basics about keeping your new flock and the breeds page will help you with some quick info on the different breeds that are out there.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Good luck with raising your chickens! Everyone here is really helpful. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center! It may help you with your decisions! Glad to have you with us. I hope you find everything that you need to know!

Ok, So have completed my flock with all the types of Chicks I wanted.. For a total of 8 and I couldn't be happier.. I just added the last 2 today. An Easter egger and a little Bantam, to go along with my 2 buff orphingtons, 2 barred rock, a silver laced Wyandotte, and a sweet little buff silkki. My girls (kids) and I are having a blast watching them grow and scratch!!! They even respond to my voice.. We took them out the other day for some fresh air and sunshine.. Cutiest things ever!!!!
We are getting ready to move and I am bit nervous about building my prefab coop.. At 46 I have always had a hard time following directions!!!! HMMMMMmmmm....Anyway just wanted to share a bit about my new babies.. Pic to follow soon... Happy Chickening

Quote YEAH!!! finally almost summer!!!!!

Glad you got the breeds you wanted. You may be able to find coops on Craig's list. Sometimes they have coops + chickens because the people decided they didn't want them anymore.
