New to Chickens

Welcome to BYC! Chicken math is tough. I have had my 3 chooks since june and they haven't started laying yet. I built a very cheap coop mostly from scrap, pallets, and donated materials, I let my girls range a bit and feed them bits of leftovers as well as the food from the feed store, I estimate I will not get an egg until October at the soonest. Before I see a single egg i will have spent about $150 ( told you I was cheap) but all in all I love my girls and feel like all the money( not much) and all the hard work ( a ton of it) has been worth it. Let us know if you are getting chicks, pullets, or layers. Show us pictures of everything if you can. Check out the coops other people have built. BYC is the best resource for learning about everything chicken. Good luck!

Hi,
we did the math and it is more cost effective to have chickens and feed them to obtain eggs than to purchase them from the store and in the end we will also have meat. My daughter mad about that. We are planning a flock of 30 birds semi free range (only when we out with them).
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. The cost of eggs from your own chickens will only be substantially less than that of store bought eggs if you have really exceptional layers. That means getting White Leghorns if you want white eggs and Sex Links (they are marketed under a lot of different labels, but there are actually only two varieties, Black and Red) if your want brown eggs. These are the hens that the commercial laying houses use, with good reason, as they are egg laying machines. While I am very utilitarian in my approach and have Black Sex Links in my flock (I don't like the Leghorns as well as they are flighty and high strung), I have some other breeds as well. Like most BYC members, I'm of the opinion that the primary reason for raising chickens is just for the pure joy of it, and if I happen to save some money by not buying store bought eggs then that is just a bonus. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.
