Upstate NY
Hi, all. My husband, two kids, and two cocker spaniels live in upstate NY. (FAR away from the city.)

We want to start raising backyard chickens and are trying to hammer out the details.

We thought we'd missed the boat for this year, until a friend recently announced she has some lavender orpingtons that will be hatching and available in a few weeks. This made us so excited, we decided we might just need to move forward on it! We did a little research and think orpingtons might be great for us!

Anyway, I was thrilled to find this forum as I think it will be very helpful.

Looking forward to chatting with you!
Sara

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

How funny! My name is Sarah also and I love orpingtons! They are friendly, calm, gentile, affectionate, great layers, hardy, funny and beautfiul. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this breed!

Feel free to ask any questions; we'd love to help.

Also, be sure to visit out learning center and hatching eggs area where you'll find lots of helpful info to get you started.

Oh, you will love Orpingtons! They are very docile and friendly, make great pets and they are great layers as well! Work with them as babies and you will have lap chickens in no time!!

Mountain peeps has left you with some great links to follow for all kinds of good info. Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Sounds like Divine providence led you to those Lavender Orpingtons, and as Mountain Peeps (Sarah) has said, Orpingtons are a wonderful breed (for all the reasons she gave); I have some Buff Orpingtons myself for those same reasons. Good luck with your Orpington flock.

Thanks for the hellos and great info, everyone!

We ended up with 7 lavender orpington chicks, 3 wheaton ameraucanas, and 2 that are either Easter eggers or olive eggers. Some of the orpingtons seem like they like to be held already!!
