Hey everybody! I have just gotten my first chickens! Two baby cochins. They are about four weeks old. Super cute. My question for yall is how to bond with the chicks. They get very scared when i try to pick them up and make a lot of chirping. Is it ok to hold them? I dont want to stress them out but i want them to get familiar with me. How do you guys socialize with your chickens?

Hello & welcome!

So......if they don't like to be picked up yet, I would suggest putting some chick crumble in your palm and resting it flat on the coop floor. It will take a bit, but they will come and investigate, walking over your hand. When they do that, gently raise a finger or two to stroke them. They will startle at first, but some get used to your hand. Then you should be able to gently lift them in your hand, few inches at a time until they will come rushing up to you. Be aware, tho' some breeds are not as affectionate as others, also, like people - some individuals are not 'cuddly'.
Good luck and send us pictures!
