I have 2 mallard ducks my husband bought. Roofis the male and Lilly the female I have had them for about 3 to 4 months .. I have never personally own a duck so I have been learning as I go .. i began searching the web to learn how to care for them . I knew they where water lovers but what I didn't know was the amount of time they spend there and why.. After learning this I begain to put Roofis and Lilly in the sink and for a short time in the tub till I learned they will eat anything ..they started eating the wallpaper that's around the tub so i had my son and husband build a pin... well what they called a pin . It didn't work.. with in a week I lost 5 chickens ..my kids have dogs and I don't know if the ducks and checken have found a way out that I can't find or if they are flying out the hole we made for easy access to there water but eather way I have put to much time into the ducks for them to be eatin. .so I decided to put them back in the cage they grow up in they have been there a week and a few days ago I noticed Roofis is loosing his feathers and I'm not talking about a few feathers missing here ppl ..he has a larger spot that starts in between his wings and goes to his tail feathers his skin was red and didn't look right ..Lilly is not doing this thank god ..but I can't figure out why it is happening. it dose not sound like Mulching from what i have read online.. so my concern is. could this be from something natural or is it somting I did if so how do i fix.it

Hi. :welcome We have a duck forum here too.

Just a few observations - ducks will use their bills to investigate, it doesn't mean they are eating everything, but testing it out to see what it is. It is possible they will eat things they shouldn't though. But, most is investigation.

It sounds like your ducks and chickens might be getting out of whatever pen they are in? Are they still in the house or outside?
Maybe one of the ducks or chickens is picking at the duck that has the feather loss. If you post pics of the duck as well as the set up, we can offer more advice.

Best wishes for the feather issue

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I don't know much about ducks but the folks on the "Duck forum certainly do." I think confining the ducks is causing the feather plucking. I don't know what your setup looks like but, if there is no cover on your duck area they can and will fly out.
