New to ducks and needing advice please

Thanks Wendeld,
I've decided not to let my ducks go free range but to build a bigger enclosure instead.
At the moment they are in an aviary that was originally built for parrots - it's about 6m long by 2m wide.
I just upgraded their swimming facilities from a plastic tub to a much bigger plastic kiddies pool which they can have a good swim and a dive in.

They seem very happy with it and their cage.
Yesterday afternoon I drained and cleaned the pool and while I was filling it the ducks were having a blast, diving and splashing and going crazy!

So my next project is to fence off a section of the garden for the ducks and build a nice big pond for them that doesn't need cleaning out so often.
At the moment my big problem with the current facilities is the amount of time it takes to feed them and clean out the 'pond' every day.
I have a 10 litre water reservoir to supply them with clean water but it seems no matter how big the reservoir they always empty it in a few hours. Because of this I like to keep the pond as clean as I can so that they never run out of drinking water.
At the end of the day however the pond is full of sludge!

I was wondering if I would need put a roof over the new enclosure I plan on building?
Obviously there will be a shelter inside the enclosure where the ducks can escape the elements but I was thinking of using field fencing to make an enclosure and leaving the top open.
I'd like to get some ornamental ducks too and was worried that cats might be a problem for them if the top was not covered.

(Would it be better to start a new thread for this? Sorry not good at forums)
