I am new to ducks and have just set up on outside pen that is 6 x 12. I just have it on the grass for now but thinking of some kind of lining and a top dressing so I will not be solid mud. For now I have 1 mallard hen.

Hi there,
I keep my ducks and chicks together but the requirements from what I have been able to find out are the same. When I put fresh bedding in my run I usually do it in layers.
1. Rake everything up.
2. 1-2" deep in sandbox (clean) sand.
3. Sprinkle well with DE
4 lightly mis the DE into the top layer of sand.
5. Cover with pine shavings (maybe 3-4 inches).

The DE I use is mixed into a clay base that helps to absorb excess water. The sand helps with drainage. The ducks will make huge mess around the water so having a fairly thick layer of shavings makes for easy cleanup because you can just take off whats wet at the top and replace it. I keep the run covered to avoid rain saturation, but the waterer always makes for a little extra clean up. My girls are out during the day, but the run is alays open so they're in and out.

hope that helps!
