Hello out there, About four days ago my neighbor had two ducks, a mallard and a perkin. The perkin was eaten by a bob cat. The two ducks grew up together.
So she asked, if I wanted her mallard and her chicken little. I jumped on it. Her and her husband have a lot going on and I have more space.
Well the mallard had two toe nails missing and a little blood on him, but other than that he seemed fine. I was just wondering if ducks and be sad like humans. Brownie looks kinda depressed and is making me sad. Do you think that if I got him a female duck that, that might cheer him up a bit? And if he's not sad and has an injured neck, I guess that will take time to heal. He doesn't do much of anything and this isn't the Brownie I first met. He won't even get in the pool. Thank for your time.
I might be able to post a picture tomorrow of him.

Yes I think if you get him a girlfriend he will defiantly perk up some. Ducks are very social animals and often get depressed when alone.

And he is likely traumatized seeing his best friend murdered.

Check him over. He may have hidden injuries. Can you get poultry vitamins to give him a little boost? And maybe some treats, like thawed frozen green peas. My ducks love them, and get over their troubles (which are few and small) immediately when they see the peas. Not too many . . . don't want a tummy ache.

Congratulations! and Welcome!

Please keep us posted, especially if you find injuries or even suspect something.

You should get another duck. Just don't be upset if they don't get along right from the beginning. It will take a little bit for them to get used to each other.

I have been looking for ducks on craigslist.com Got a hold of a guy really close to me and talked for a while. I left him a message and he hasn't got back to me yet.

Could be in shock. We lost all but one duck in a predator attack and unfortunately the drake that was left did die due to delayed shock, so personally I'd be careful about buying another duck unless he perks up, because we made that mistake and ended up buying a campbell duck as a friend, and having him die on her. =S

Although, 4 days does sound a reasonable amount of time, so I think you're probably safe there.

I took a look at him before I moved him to my house. I really didn't see anything, except the way he had his neck bent or curled I should say. He doesn't hold his head up.
I do have poultry vitamins and he has been on them since I brought him to my house. How long is too long for the vitamins? How many peas would you give him in a day? 1/4 cup? Can you just throw them in the pool?

I have a lot of things to do today, but I will try to take a picture of him. Thank you guys for your help!

I'm sorry to hear that Kitei. I think he is doing well enough to have a friend now. Now I just have to find a duck! Anyone know where I can find an older duck in Southern California?
