Hello all! My name is Liz and I live in El Dorado County of California, right smack dab in Gold Rush country.
I've lurked through tens of, maybe even a hundred, articles on this site in doing research to do what you do: Raise some helpful friends in my backyard
My main goal this spring is to hatch quail from eggs.
Currently: collecting things to build a "cooler-bator" for hatching, researching different containment/housing methods for quails once they've grown their real feathers, and trying to find a local source of gamebird food (not going well). I've read almost all recent (within 4 yrs) articles involving raising quail from egg to illnesses that I could find on this site...Been considering these birdies for nearly 2 years now!
I'm getting into this whole "hobby" because I'm super into sustainability and ecology, I'm going to hopefully use my quail for pest management help in the garden. One day wayyyy down the line I hope to have a small homestead...with all kinds of poultry and small livestock. Quail are so cute, economically sized, and quieter than a lot of their relatives. I can also never EVER find quail eggs in local grocery stores.
I'm probably going to stick with coturnix quail because I don't want to have to deal with gamebird licenses, if anyone knows of any other breeds you can have in CA without licenses give me a shout please!
I'm considerably young I guess, not currently working but I am going back to job hunting soon. I do a lot of self-education and I've jumped into volunteering as of 2019. I've got a few AA degrees and NOW I'm thinking of jumping into the deep end of obtaining a BS in sustainable horticulture, or make my own kind of sustainability major. I have a dog, very mixed herding/guarding and retrieving breeds, and she is my picture (probably until I get some eggs/chicks going).
If you have any advice involving quail or even chickens, especially in the Sierra Nevada high elevation foothills, please share with me
