Hi my name is Cathy and I checked out Backyard Chickens website because my city daughter decided to marry a hunter and move up to Northern Ontario. I thought it would be excellent present to them if I built them a chicken coup! So I came on here for ideas and to learn myself!

Lucky them! What a wonderful present!

There are lots of different kinds of coops. What did you have in mind? In general I think most here would agree that bigger is better. So is predator proof so think through the issue of quality materials and heavy hardware cloth that is either dug in or extended out to prevent digging. In Northern Ontario you might also want to think about some insulation and providing electricity. I wish I had added storage for supplies to my coop before I had it built. You might plan in a quarantine area for new stock being integrated into the flock.

Then there are chicken issues. Will they want a rooster to breed the chickens? If so you might think about space for incubating and brooding. How many will you plan for them to start with and how many more do you think they'll want to grow into. Are they homesteading? If they are they might want serious egg production they can count on. And, I suppose, to butcher them as well. So they might want to raise both strong egg layers and meat chickens or maybe they'd be OK with dual purpose birds.

That's what I can think of that you might want to consider.

Please check out the thread "Canadians, check in here." to ask about breeds that do best in your climate, type of coop they use, predator protection etc. I think they could give you the best information - as the BYCERS there are living through it on a daily basis.

The only thing I know is Chanticleer breed of chicken originated in Canada to handle the severe weather. Welcome to Backyard chickens.
