New to feathered friends

I inherited 2 laying hens and a big mean rooster. They don't lay eggs very often. I want to raise from chicks and want to build a new inexpensive pen. the existing one is a good pen but I cant turn out the old chickens since I have cats on my property and live in the woods, there are predators. I don't want to subject them to a harsh reality. I need to know how to get started so it was recommended by a friend to visit this site and here I am!
