New to forum with 7 week old chicks in East Bay CA

Hi everyone! I finally broke down and made an account. I have been a lurker for a while now reading as much as I can about chickens. I got my chicks 7 weeks ago. I got 4, one Rhode Island Red, one Austrolorp and 2 Ameracaunas. I never knew how much I would love chickens! HA! My husband's aunt has had chickens for a few years and I loved the idea behind it. Fast forward a few years and I had a son (who is 2 now) and got into nutrition... just trying to keep us healthy. My son and I eat about a half dozen eggs a day between the two of us, so I really started researching chickens in my area, and we are allowed them!

I foolishly bought a coop off the interwebz and it turned out to be way too small. They are in there now, but my dad is amazing and helping us build a new, bigger, way better coop.

I am excited to be here and excited with having chickens.

I have all Bantams, and they are the smallest and cutiest little things ever....Congrats on your new "kids" and look forward to learning more

Glad you have someone to help you build a bigger coop. That was a lesson for me as well!

Good idea for a brooder!

Another tip: Use the right wood! I wasted a bunch of money using wood on a tractor that wasn't meant to be outdoors. Even though I painted it - it's starting to fall apart. It'll last for a little while longer, but not for as long as I hoped.

It's tough not to keep getting more and more chickens! I keep having to remind myself of how large of a coop they really need - otherwise, we'd have a hundred of em'
