Hi All,

I've hand reared a mourning dove, Boyd, which unfortunately imprinted and is a permanent resident in my home. I would have loved to released him, but he thinks I'm his mate and bobs and coos whenever he sees me. I tried introducing other rescued birds to him, but he attacks them

I did a better job with Pidgey, the Rock Pigeon. he was also hand reared, but I was able to release him. He comes home every evening between 17:00 and 16:00 if the back door is open though and roosts on top of the kitchen cupboard. If I'm late he waits for me at the front gate. I can still carry him on my wrist, but he bites and growls at me. I'm hoping he'll find a mate and they'll nest close enough for me to see his chicks grow up.

That is a pretty bird! They are lucky to have you there to help them.

Are you sure its a rock pigeon? It has a red ring around its eye like a Diamond Dove, but its too large to be one. Could it possibly be a hybrid?

He know's he's a pretty bird too

We have lots of his family members around here in the gardens

Baby photo's. Sadly, the smaller chick didn't survive.

They are big birds and weigh around 300+ grams.

That sure is some collection of birds you have

I'll have to Google most to get an idea of what they are.

"My" pigeon is also called a Speckled Pigeons, I think. The one thing I've found particularly amazing about him is the way he drinks water. He comes into the kitchen, has his supper, flies out again to the water bowl, jumps (literally jumps into the water, which can be up to his chest), sticks his whole face into the water, even covering his eyes and just guzzles away! Then he flies back into the kitchen to settle for the night and I close the door. He's got me well trained
