Hello. I live in NC and acquired several chickens over this past summer & fall. I have 4 ameraucana(or americanas-not sure which), a andalusian, a australorp. a red sex link, a bantam cochin and a jersey giant (not sure if it is). One of the ameraucanas grew up to be a rooster; I've only heard him crow once...hope he says quiet because if the neighbors complaint I'll have to rehome him. The girls like him and he takes his job seriously...protecting the girls, you know. He certainly is handsome and I do want to keep him.
The andalusian is my favorite and a hoot! 2nd favorite is the sex link. Both have figured a way out of the chicken yard even though it has a cover. When they see me coming, they run to me and follow me around like two puppy dogs.
I especially appreciate the 'food' section of the forum. I feed mine crumbles and a three grain scratch, but didn't realize there was such a variety of foods they would enjoy. I buy them live crickets and freeze dried meal worms once a week which they gobble up as fast as they can catch 'em. Can't wait till morning to surprise them with a milk/water, oatmeal, crumble hot mush mixture tomorrow! Plan to pick up a variety of greens tomorrow too.
The andalusian is the only hen laying...a get about 3 white eggs from her a week. (Wish the others would bless me with a few eggs.)
When I clean their coop and put in new bedding (either pine shavings or straw) she has to inspect it, rearrange the straw and wiggle in it. What a silly girl.
