new to goat breeding. registering goat kids?

My kids have a herd of registered Boers for 4-H (currently 1 buck, 2 wethers, and 6 does). The ABGA is very friendly and helpful to deal with over the phone, but anything submitted the "old fashioned way" on paper takes FOREVER to be processed. Thankfully, they have an online registry that is pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it...

Tattoos are the same procedure with Boers as has been described for dairy registries. Right ear gets herd prefix tattoo, left ear gets year (each year has an alphabet letter assigned to it, 2015 = E) and a kid #. So the first kid born this year is E1, second kid born E2, and so on...

As far as having a "unique" herd name for the ABGA, they either don't care or don't enforce it. I am able to enter whatever registered name I want, with no criteria other than every name must begin with the herd prefix assigned to that HUMAN owner, not FARM.

The major PITA with the ABGA (and some other species registries) is that the animals are not registered to a "farm", they have to be registered to ONE specific human. So our herd is actually split up under 3 different humans, all with different herd prefixes, but all registered names begin with the "farm" name. It has to be that way for my kids to show their Boers as registered. Confusing, I know...

An example of how our Boers are registered:
Child #1 has animals named ABC123 Farm Name Animal Name; ear tattoos are ABC123
Child #2 has animals named ABC456 Farm Name Animal Name; ear tattoos are ABC456
Child #3 has animals named ABC789 Farm Name Animal Name; ear tattoos are ABC789

As far as selling registered Boer kids, you can complete paperwork transfers online to the new owners, even IF that owner isn't a member of the ABGA. It does make it a little easier and quicker for everybody vs. the old paper trail method which is akin to signing a car title over (just without the notary).

Boers can be registered with just one parent being registered, it happens all the time. They are issued "percentage" papers that list what percent <100% they are considered. Bucks can only get full registration if they are 100%, otherwise they are issued a "Record of Pedigree" which is still valuable to trace their lineage.
