Welcome to BYC!!!

When I boil eggs I add salt to the water. It's an Old Wives' Tale my MIL taught me, but it seems to make them much easier to peel.

I'm so sorry about your experience, that sounds like something out of a nightmare.
Do you use day old or week maybe longer? I have tried so many ways and still 90% I don't get a smooth egg out of the shell
