Hi

I am new to this forum and new to having chickens. In fact I am waiting for my hen house to arrive here in the next couple of weeks.

We live on just under 6 acres here in South Eastern Ontario. I am married to my wonderful husband Reino and we have a 10 year old son.

We both work full-time and are currently starting an organic orchard. Stage 2 of our orchard is going in this spring.

I have been reading about everything I can get my hands on to get prepared for the hens. I still deciding what specific breed I will get. At the end of the month I am going to look at some Ameraucana hens and a rooster nearby here. They are a year old and are already laying. I hope to then more slowly learn about hatching out eggs and growing my flock.

I see there is a lot of info in here in the forums and I am really looking forward to the learning journey and the fun of having chickens.

from Washington! Just make sure that you realize those Ameraucanas have an 80% chance of being crossbred Easter Eggers.

Which still may give you colored eggs, they're just not the same.

Welcome to BYC, from Michigan! I started with 6 Easter Egger chicks last year (also refered to as Americana, Auracana ect) that lay a variety of colors of eggs (blue, green, seafoam green and even pink). They are great birds with wonderful personalities and kids love the colored eggs. Good luck with your new adventure it sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun work ahead

from another Michiganiac!

Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers tend to be very cold hardy due to their small pea combs, a good choice for your climate. PM patandchickens for more info about chicken keeping in Ontario!
