Hi everyone! After a few years of planting a vegetable garden, and of harvesting plums from my plum tree, then having recently set up a greywater system to water my backyard from bathtub water...now the urban farming bug has caught me and I'm excited about the idea of having urban backyard chickens. I know nothing about this, and have been looking online for information and resources, which was how I came across this website. My aim is to have chickens both as pets, and for eggs and later on chicken meat. I was interested in the idea of having a Nigerian Dwarf Goat as well, but I now think that may not work out, as I read they can make noise, and I have a small yard and many neighbors live close to me. I'm excited to read posts here and learn about coop designs, runs, chicken breeds, and find out all about raising chickens!

Hens don't make that much noise, no more than a dog. Alot of people have chickens in small yards. Sometimes it is the rooster that causes a problem w/neighbors. I don't know about goats. Check with your local ordinances on chickens.

from the East Bay! Cool that you found us. There is so much great info here, and so many great people. We must warn you, this place is addicting.

While I'm at it....

We are trying to get a chickenstock going here in the Bay Area. It's a get together for BYCers, because usually we only know each other from the forum, and it's nice to put a face with a name.

Good luck with getting chickens. If you have any questions you came to the right place.
