New to it all!!! Would love any and all advice!

Hey everyone, I am totally new to the BYC stuff so am going to have a ton of questions. We plan on our chickens to be our children's first big responsibility (of course my husband and I will be involved too though).

We are hoping to get 3 chicks that lay 3 different colored eggs for our 3 kiddo's. We are in Idaho so they will need to be OK in the colder winter months. The top priority is that they are great with kids (ours are 6, 4, 2). So-what do you all recommend?????

Buff orpingtons are docile quiet and affectionate,they make good pets. they are also cold hardy with good egg production and are ok being confined or free range.
