Hi, I'm new to keeping chickens. I moved from UK to Spain 5 years ago. I enjoy baking and cooking, I got fed up with buying eggs which spread all over pan and yolks which broke when cracking eggs. So decided to try keeping a few hens. I didn't realise it was so addictive!! I started with 4 but didn't get enough eggs---------now have 13, 4 which were hatched from a friends fertilised eggs, under a broody hen. We had 6 eggs, three she hatched out , then left the other 3 one of which had started to break through its shell. They were cold when we noticed nearly threw them but I decided to have a listen, I heard a little chirp. There was ants crawling out of shell but we decided to try to get chick out. We gently picked shell off and warmed shell in warm water as it was stuck on chick, after perseverance we got chick out. After nursing for about 3 hours it is now a healthy BOY! The other eggs were lost. Now love the chickens, and the little cockerel is more like a friendly parrot. I'll shut up now, as I'm feeling I might get boring.

Hi, Thanks for the welcome. Maybe you can help me with a small problem! My flock have started feather plucking, thought it might be mites and treated then thought it maybe they were in too confined space, so now have pent house with plenty of space and lots of roosting perches. Think they have developed bad habits but not sure what to do next. I have purchased blinders but hesitant to use. Now thinking of finding some sort of sleeve to put on there necks. Any suggestions please.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
What is the protein content of their feed? Too low protein can also cause feather picking.
I did think this, I do feed more protein with seeds and beans, also been feeding them the chick feed. I think it's habit, so may have to use the blinders. Have you had any experience with use?

Yes will do, I have recently been doing birthday cakes and it seemed to have escalated. Not really a cake person but enjoy decorating and have started making fondant flowers and stuff.
