This year I got 2 khaki ducks . I got lucky getting 1 male, 1 female. Lost the female. I bought 4 more khakis and have all males. I ended up with one blind duck named Rudy everyone and myself love him. My problem is I would love to get females but it seems impossible when buying from a straight run. Is there anyway I can find out their sex when buying them?
Also I would like to get the other three processed. They are 7 months old. Are they good for meat? I got two different answers.

most places don't let you touch the critters until you get them home, But I purchased 8 ducklings and ended up with 1 female out of 8. The best thing to do is check your local craigslist ads, I was able to find plenty of females. The reasons why they only do straight runs is because it is really hard to sex ducks, geese and bantam chicks. good luck!

:welcome

Count me among the "don't know ducks" folks...the members over on the duck forum will be your best place for an answer.

Best wishes!

Hi Miamoo! Welcome to BYC!

Ducklings can be sexed at a few days old, so you may have to find one of the hatcheries that sells them already sexed. There are also breeds that can be sexed at hatch by their coloring. But as I'm sure you learned with your others, they do take a while to naturally reveal their genders.

as 17chickens said, you could check your local listings and get some older ones that gender is already known.

as to processing, yes most ducks are good for meat, some better than others. I think Campbells are known more for their egg laying than meat, and are on the smaller side, but I'm sure they would still be very tasty!
