New (to me) chickens - 1/3 egg shell in nest

Well, one egg is a start. Better than none, pretty good first day trying to break the habit I think.

If there are "deposits" in the nest box, then you can be pretty sure someone is sleeping in it. Do you have roosts in the coop?

What are the demensions the dementions of the nest box? Also the measurements of the "doorway" to the nest box from the inside of the coop. They don't have to be precise measurements, just a close figure. If the entrance to the nest box is just a large hole in the wall, then the hens can see the eggs all the time. If it's just a large hole in the wall, we need to try and figure out a way to make a smaller "door," just large enough for the hens to get in and out. By doing this, we darken the nest box and in a way "hide" the eggs.

If darkening the nest box doesn't work, there is an even easier fix to the problem. Because your nest box is just a built-on room, there may be a way to cut a hole out in the back of the nest and slant the nest box floor slightly. That way once they lay an egg it simply rolls out of the nest box. It's hard to explain through text. You would make the collecting tray for the eggs(the external extension of the nest box floor) long enough that the hens can't get at the eggs from the inside of the box. I'm thinking the hole in the back of the nest box would need to be about 4 inches high and the entire length of the back of the nest box, thay way the eggs can roll freely(if your eggs are smaller than this make it smaller) into the holding/collecting tray. Then just put a hinged door onto the collecting tray, you just lift the lid to the collecting tray and the eggs are waiting for you. Of course this isn't breaking the problem, but finding a way around it.

Glad you got an egg today!

I thought one egg was pretty good. Especially because it was cool so it had been there for a little while whereas yesterday they were on it as soon as it was laid. It didn't look like there was much done to the celery - in fact the BR was standing on it when I last checked

As far as hens sleeping in the nest box, tonight dh was out there after dark and checked in with a flashlight and ALL 3 standards were sleeping in the nest box!! I don't know how they are pulling that off. The box is 24"l x 12"w x 12"h with a divider in the middle. It's at floor level with a small lip to get in and the entrance is 24"x12". I've since realized that maybe the nests shouldn't have been right at floor level. In as much research as I did before designing the coop I never read that until I've been researching the problem of egg-eating. We put it low to make sure it was lower than the roosts and also so that the kids could reach to open it up and look for eggs.

I have 2 roosts in the coop, one at 1' and one at 2.5' I have seen both of the Rocks on the roosts during the day. The RIR hangs around the nest box quite a lot and I've never seen her on the roosts. I have a feeling she's the top hen so maybe the others are following her in at night? I'm actually kind of surprised that she's allowing them in there with her!! What has happened to the instinct to sleep in the highest place?! - Oh - the Silkie sleeps on the floor in the corner.

Perhaps we should put some sort of curtain in front of the nest box entrance? What kind of material would be effective and safe?

Well, the silkies will have trouble getting on the roost. You might want to try blocking the nest box off at night.

Yes a curtain would work, but I don't know about the material part. You could try using cardboard to make the "doorway" to the nest smaller. You can also use a cardboard box to block off the nest box so they can't sleep in it. Kick 'em out.

That's a good question. Try posting it on the Coop design page and see what someone else says. Make sure to list your breeds and your current dementions.

Blocking it off at night is a great idea - my dad also suggested going out after dark and putting them on the roost and then in the dark they will have to stay there. To be honest, I'm a little afraid of handling them too much - I don't trust them yet. These hens obviously have never had a chance to roost before and are accustomed to just sleep on the floor. Blocking it at night may not help with the egg-eating though...

No, it won't help the egg-eating but it will help them get in touch with their "chicken instincts." LOL.

Let me know about the doorway size, I'd be interested to know.

I've posted about the doorway and I'm waiting to hear.

I put golf balls in the nest today but now my BR is just sitting on it!!!
