My thread about our good dog throwing off her mortal chains: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/shes-been-a-good-dog.1442569/#post-23933635

We fostered a dog for a local shelter which was overcrowded and doing everything they could to avoid euthanizing their charges. Actual, my wife decided we were going to foster a dog, and she went down and got talked into taking a hard-headed, stubborn, brilliant Siberian Husky/GSD mix that needs a lot of training and socialization; she's been through 4 households in a little over a year because the stubborn/smart thing can mean you break down and let the dog win. If the dog wins once, you lose forever.

Long story short, we're not fostering her anymore. Four homes in 14 months is too much to ask of a dog (we're the fifth), so we made it permanent.

She is an excellent dog and we work her 3 or 4 times a day. She is VERY smart and VERY strong willed but has responded well to training. The Siberian in her makes her a runner but we have almost 20 fenced acres and working her hard means she's learning her boundaries.

We're working on the "chickens are friends, not food!" concept.

She looks beautiful and intelligent!

Also, your original thread brought tears to my eyes. We had to put down our golden retriever of 10 years (she was 11 1/2) last October because she had stomach cancer and masses as well. It was heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for your loss and so happy for your (and Lola's) gain.

My sister's huskies are crazy stubborn but good girls

Luna really blossomed after about six months of being our dog. She lives to please, she greets everyone with hugs, is an absolute addict for chasing rabbits in the pastures, loves following the tractor when I'm running the field mower to catch and kill field rats, loves car rides and "talks" her husky talk to anyone who'll listen. She's a really good dog.

Luna is also pretty clear on how chickens are off-limits... but has her red line. If they walk past her, she ignores them. If they run or dart around, she checks to see whether I'm watching or not.
Our LGDs leave chickens alone during the day (because, lile Luna, they know they're supposed to leave them alone and we might see during the day). But if one gets across the fence at dusk....all bets are off.

Luna is adorable, BTW. Thank you for being the kind of people who will give a dog like her a home and work with her to help her light shine... and not "just" a second chance. :hugs
