Good morning, all! About 5 days ago, we adopted 5 Rhode Islands Reds ((approx 1y old)) from our daughter's 5th grade teacher. I believe they all are laying - we got 12 eggs in about 3 days. We have our dear Marley, 11yo German Shepherd, but other than dogs and the occasional fish, this is our first go at livestock so I did oodles of hyper-researching the week prior to officially adopting our flock. My searches often led me to a BYC forum, where I was able to find a lot of first-hand experience and tips of the trade. I could spend hours just reading through the various threads, sponging up as much knowledge as I can so we have a happy and healthy flock!
I'm a stay at home wife and nursing mama these days, but my passion is still deeply rooted in education - I'm a Beauty Culture Instructor, wellness coach, and a life-long learner. Our family enjoys all things nature - hiking, fishing, hunting, yardwork, veggie gardening - so I go from red-carpet-ready to camo, boots, mud...and love it all!
Our family is working towards living a more sustainable lifestyle, one step at a time. It's heartbreaking and stomach-churning to see the footage and hear the stories of the horrific journey most of our grocery store food endures to get there. We are stoked to know from where our food came, and to know the animals enjoyed their life in the process
Although we hope to move in the next year to a much more rural setting than where we live now and have more space, the opportunity to adopt the girls felt like a sign that this was one of those baby steps in the right direction.
I've had construction/wrangling help from the hubs, 11yo pre-teen daughter is loving collecting eggs AND cleaning out poop ((⬅you can't make this stuff up)), and little guy can point to his chickens and wants to feed them!
Ohh, and I just may have used some subliminal messaging on my husband when naming the girls in order to peak his interests more...Althea(boss lady), Loose Lucy(she's a runner), Bertha(the outcast ), Sugaree(little sweety), and Ramble on Rose(our talker).
Already so GRATEFUL for our flock! ✌
