New to quails but have been keeping and hatching chicken a few years now, we have just set 84 eggs in the Incubator thinking these would be simple and now have questions... our bad!!

Questions we think are simple,silly and probably common sense;

We understand that these birds will need keeping in a brooder for around 4 weeks at a ambient temperature, so will they need a heat source like chicks and what is the ambient temperature? As weathers getting warmer I fort they could come out The brooder earlier.

How do we sex chinese quails as we dont want to be keeping loads of cocks if that what they call quail males also what age do you sex them at?, we would like to keep some males as once we're comfortable with quails we want to breed our own.

We are planing on feeding them layers out chickens have what advice would you give us on this from YOUR experience?

We are hatching chinese painted quails and Japanese quails and would in the future like to breed both breeds so will keep a few males so would you advice us to separate these birds or will they just not cross breed due to size difference etc?

How many males to female ratio?

This is what we knocked together for there accommodation do you think its practical?

Front I added a door so if we want to use it for breeding hens etc we can it gives it a multi use.

Side angle with out the roof.. which is detachable.

The roof detached for easy acces to all the accommodation. I was think of putting it on hinges.

The final finished piece with my littke helper trying it out!

Also what can I use for them to lay eggs in bearing in mind I will be putting bark down with bushes in there too.

For the last two stupid question what are male and female quails called ? Is it just cockerel and hen like chickens?

Thank I advance for your help!

I'll try to answer your questions briefly, there is plenty more information on any given subject...

I brood 100 week one, 95 week two, 90 week three 85 week four, depending on conditions I'll move to grow out pens after 4 weeks.

Cant help about sexing Chinese, I don't know...

No your chicken layer feed will NOT be adequate, you need a gamebird starter with at least 26% protien, I feed Purina startena 30%

Again cant answer about Chinese I have never kept them.

One male can keep 5-6 hens maybe 7. For my breeders I like 1roo 3hens

Your pen is probably fine, I raise my birds on wire, after a few days you'll know why.

Coturnix don't need anything special for laying they'll just put it down wherever they are, Chinese, idunno.

And lastly the males are called "Framalamadingdongs" and the females are called "Femalimatingalings"

(just kidding) Hens and Cockerels as far as I know, most folks call them Roosters or Roos.

"some folks calls it a sling blade, I call it a kaiser blade.<grunt> it's just a long handle like a axe handle with a long blade on it that's shaped kind of like a bananer. <grunt> Sharp on one edge and dull on the other.<grunt> It's what the highway boys use to cut down weeds and whatnot." <grunt>

I agree with quail jailer on everything except one... The average temp for week one should be no more than 97 degrees then subtract 5 degrees every week after that until you reach about 75 degrees. Also you will have a hard time cleaning out that cage, if you open the roof with adult quail they will most likely fly out. I love the cage though!

Thanks all what wire mesh do you keep them on ? As there is no floor so I could raise it on legs and put a mesh floor in and can't you clip quails like chickens I read you can ? Thanks all

I have some button quails and I candled them and all I see is veins and a tiny body but no heart beat does this mean its dead

I personally don't keep them on wire so I don't know but as for clipping their wings, you sure can. I am going to do it to the ones in my aviary once they are mature since they can't really fly that well yet.

I use 1/2" X 1/2"

I do not have a lot of trouble with my birds flying, as a matter of fact I commonly leave the pens open while I am cleaning or feeding, my birds dont even WANT out. Try not to startle them and you'll be ok. I make a habit of talking to them so they'll learn my voice and identify me when I come around.

I have a grow out pen that has a top door, I knock on it gently and they are not startled when I open, but if I just lift the lid, it scares them.
