What was the gender verdict?
It's funny because my daughter was given a rabbit a few weeks ago. Her friend had gotten this dwarf for Easter and just didn't want it. Last week I went into a very small local pet shop to get FISH FOOD. OMG, the smell of ammonia was so overwhelming just opening the door. There was at least 15 rabbits in there, dogs, mice, hamsters, and birds. First time I had been in there and I was ready to cry at the conditions. The owner and her daughter (young gal, maybe 10-11yrs old) were running it. Anyway, I was looking over the animals, not really wanting, or needing any of them. She has the price at $40/rabbit, but must have noticed me inspecting cages or something, and offered me my pick for $10. There was a lionhead that I liked, and she insisted was a female. I asked if it was OK if I held it before buying, and sure enough, PURE MALE! As in, no guessing!
Sooo I explained to her how to sex a rabbit, and what those lovely, oblong, pink things were. By this time my daughter comes in to see what's taking me so long.
She whispers "Mom, we need to rescue at least one of these rabbits!" Long story at little shorter,
we did bring a dwarf female home. I don't think the poor thing had ever had anything but the rabbit pellets. She wasn't sure what grass, or veggies were. Slowly we're getting her onto a more healthy diet.
BTW, most rabbit pellets were designed for commercial MEAT rabbits, with the purpose of growing them quick, and putting weight on them. NOT what you want for a pet rabbit!
I had raised rabbits as a teenager, but haven't owned one since. I insisted my daughter research their care intensively!
I'm sure I'll be here asking questions about them though, as I think I've forgotten more than I knew! Ughh!
