New to raising chickens.... Need help/advice!

In about 2 weeks, it will be time to "cut a deal" with another Houston BYC'er for some fertile eggs.
Then Holiday can set on those eggs and by March there will be more little reasons

to celebrate all the care and affection you have shown this little bird.

Just trying to start something here . . .

Actually that picture is a bit bright and washed out (Cheap Sony camera)..

Here is a picture I took of her with my Nikon which is a bit closer to real life.

Luclin, does she have that much red in her? That is a major difference in photos. she is quite the pretty bird now isn't she?

I can't say that either camera is exactly right but her coloring is closer to the last photo than the other one.

The Sony camera I took the first pictures with always seems to have exposure and gamma problems when taking pictures in full sunlight.

After looking at this thread, my wife (who actually took the pictures of the eggs) told me.

"The reason why the two eggs are different colors is because the brown egg is Holly's and the white one is a store bought egg. I took the picture of the two of them together to show the differences."

Since she is the one who found the eggs over the weekend I just assumed the picture she took was of both of the eggs Holly had laid up to that point.

You had me wondering on those eggs. LOL I have had mixed breed hens before and they never laid different colored eggs

Guess it just fell through the cracks...

So I just wanted to say "Hi

fellow Houstonian". I live in Sealy now, but have lived in Houston and other suburbs. I love your sweet chicken story and I think Holly is a perfect name! I'm new to chickens too, but at least I planned it and started with little baby chickies

Well we had our first "predator scare" the other night.

Holly still prefers to roost on the branch in the tree at sunset and I typically move her over to the run an hour or two later but last Saturday night when I went out to get her something else was in the bushes and scaring the devil out of her.

It jumped over the fence when I approached so I couldn't get a look at it but I think that it was a large cat.

So.. Since she wouldn't want to roost in the run and the 2'x2'x2' box I had built her didn't seem to appeal to her I've built her this:

wow! ive never seen a pic of this breed before! its the most beautiful chook ive ever seen....looove the red...ive heard that chooks go funny without atleast 1 other friend (is this true?)...the coop u built is bloody unreal! u could sell it for a mint! its everything a chook could want rolled into 1! u seem such a lovely person to put this much time and effort into 1 chook....she is so so lovely...i hope u do get just 1 more buddy for her...hopefully the same type....now i want 1, just like ur's! lol
please do enjoy ur chook! they require little effort for the joy they give...plus their simple peacefulness is really very calming when ur crabby or have had a fight (i sit and watch my roo to peace out when ive had a disagreement with my partner...works everytime )
